I previously posted about identity being key to self-improvement. However, the identity of “animal rights activist” is broad. Having the identity of being an animal rights activist is easier said than done. Using virtues, we can break down identity into distinct features that are easier to understand and implement.
This might sound like a cop-out, but all the virtues I wrote about have been active in my mind at some point. As I make it over hurdles (such as getting over the anxiety or fear of talking to random people, giving speeches, or dealing with the police), I can shelve those virtues to focus on others.
Right now, I think I struggle the most with ambition. Am I aiming high enough? Wayne Hsiung said we need ambitious goals to inspire others. I agree, but I have to make sure they are achievable. I can't sell a dream that I don't think we will make a reality. However, I don't want small goals that are easy or don't inspire others. Striking the right balance and adjusting as those balances change is my current challenge.
Yes, distractions are everywhere in our lives. Keep focused on what's important.
Well said, and I totally agree. I like virtue ethics because it gives me something concrete to center myself around.
